Why you should consider crocheting a chunky star stitch crochet blanket

Crocheting is a wonderful way to relax while creating something beautiful and useful at the same time. Have you ever tried crocheting the star stitch? This crochet blanket can be a perfect introduction to the star stitch, and it will produce a warm and cozy throw blanket that is perfect for snuggling up on a cold day.

Here are a few reasons why you should consider crocheting a chunky star stitch crochet blanket.

  • 1. It’s easy to learn. The star stitch looks more complicated than it actually is. With a little practice, you’ll have it down in no time. This stitch creates a beautiful texture that is perfect for a cozy throw blanket.
  • 2. It’s really warm. The chunky yarn used for this project creates a thick, warm blanket perfect for snuggling up on a cold day. Once you try it, you may never want to return to a worsted-weight blanket again.
  • 3. It makes a great gift. The star stitch crochet blanket is a perfect gift for any occasion. You can customize it with different yarn colours to match the recipient’s style. Plus, who doesn’t love a cozy blanket? I made this blanket for my granddaughter. The soft colour and amazing texture make it a perfect backdrop for photos.

Crochet a blanket border

I added a feminine and dainty Picot stitch border to the star stitch crochet blanket. It’s so easy and quick to crochet and adds the ‘wow’ factor to this blanket. It’s the perfect size for my daughter and her little one to snuggle up in, but it also makes the perfect soft textured backdrop for photos. Pair it with a Snuggle Me Organic Baby Lounger. Baby feels so soft and cozy that it’s perfect for snapping those perfect pics!

Why crochet a chunky blanket?

Chunky yarn is an excellent choice for crocheting a blanket for a few reasons:

  • 1. It’s warm: Chunky yarn is thicker than most other yarn weights, which means it has more insulation properties. When crocheted, chunky yarn creates a warm, extra-thick fabric that’s perfect for wrapping up in on a cold winter night.
  • 2. It works up quickly: Because the yarn is thicker, you can create a blanket with fewer stitches and, as a result, you can finish a project more quickly. This makes chunky yarn perfect for crocheting blankets, especially if you’re short on time.
  • 3. It’s easy to work with: Chunky yarn is easier to work with than finer yarns because the stitches are more pronounced, making it easier to see where to place your hook when completing each stitch. This makes it a great choice for beginners or those with visual impairments.
  • 4. It creates texture: Chunky yarn is great for creating texture in your crochet projects. This is especially evident in a blanket, where the texture adds interest and depth to the finished product.

Overall, chunky yarn is an excellent choice for crocheting a blanket because of its warmth, speed, ease of use, and texture. When making a chunky blanket, you can create a soft and snuggly masterpiece in no time!

Yarn needed to crochet a chunky blanket

I’ve chosen Mary Maxim Titan for the star stitch crochet blanket. it’s an affordable 100% acrylic yarn that comes in a fantastic selection of modern colours. Although this yarn may feel stiff when working up, it washes really well and comes out so soft. You’ll love the softness and durability of this yarn.

Yarn Substitutions

Titan Bulky is a heavy Bulky weight #5 yarn. Alternatives yarns you may wish to try are Charisma, found at Michaels by Loops and Threads, Lion brand Hue & Me, as well as Bernat Softee Chunky. Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick is an excellent acrylic/wool blend that will work well with this pattern; it is thicker, so you may need to use a larger hook, and the blanket will come out a little larger.

You can also use two strands of your favourite worsted-weight yarn to equal the equivalent bulkiness. This is a good option if you struggle to find a good substitute.

There are several different ways to crochet the Star Stitch. I liked this version of the Star Stitch from Dora Does. I preferred how she ended with a star stitch rather than with a hdc. You can check her blog post out HERE.
